If you’ve lost a puppy or been torn from sending puppies home, there’s no better place for you to get the support you are missing than from other breeders who understand the level and depth of loss we face.
We are helping breeders like you cope with and process the grief associated with puppy loss. Puppy loss grief goes unacknowledged and unsupported even among breeders and we want to change that.
Grief is real for breeders. We experience loss when we have a stillborn or a lost puppy. When we send puppies home and the house suddenly feels so empty. When a beloved dog dies. Or when we have to rehome an adult.
It tears us up and puts us on an emotional roller coaster. It affects our relationships, our sleep, our health.
As a society, we are grief illiterate, and we often find ourselves stuck with no one around to help us deal with all the emotions we are going through. We hear phrases like “Oh are you still upset about Maggie”? or “it was just a puppy, don’t you have a bunch of those?” To truly heal you need to first understand what you are going through.
Many years ago I was responsible for a huge holiday party at work. It was a beautiful, wonderful event, with big tents and flowing linens on a picturesque farm with glittering lights and amazing food and music. We had over 100 people attending.
The afternoon of the party, I called my boss and told him everything was set and the party would be great, but I wasn’t attending. My dearly loved pet was fighting cancer and he was due for a round of chemotherapy and I was spending the night in the hospital with him.
My boss was dumbfounded and couldn’t believe I wasn’t showing up for the party. He just couldn’t understand that Harley was more important to me than a party or even a job. It ended up being a point of contention for us for a while.
A few years later he got his first family dog ever. Before the dog was even fully grown, he came to me and said “I get it now. I would have done the same thing if it had been Beau.”
Years. It took years for him to get it. And most people don’t.
Our grief not only isn’t acknowledged, it’s often dismissed, looked down on, or even ridiculed.
